Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) focuses on the muscles of the face and mouth and teaches clients how to breathe, posture, swallow, and speak correctly.  Its main focus is creating a healthy balance between orofacial structure and function. When these functions are impaired, an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD) exists.

Myofunctional therapy service includes (but is not limited to) everything from mouth breathing, tongue-tie, lip-tie, tongue thrust, thumb sucking, and feeding difficulties in individuals of all ages.

An orofacial myofunctional disorder is any irregularity in the form and function of the muscles or the face and mouth.  This may also include dental or skeletal structures that could affect normal growth and development.  OMDs can occur throughout the lifespan and may present differently in different age groups.

In children, adolescents, and adults, symptoms may include:

  • persisting food aversions

  • mouth breathing

  • tongue thrust

  • facial pain

  • improper jaw growth and/or malocclusion

    • sleep-disordered breathing/apnea

  • impaired speech production

  • improper body alignment/posture

Myofunctional therapy is an exercise training program for the muscles around your face, mouth, and tongue. These exercises are designed to improve issues with talking, eating, or breathing.
